In this review a systematic Fock space formulation shall be presented which has recently been developped by the present author. In this formulation the invariance of the Hamiltonian under the unitary group U(2N) or U( N) of unitary transformations among the basis functions is emphasized and a tensor notation of the basic Fock space operators is used, that displays the transformation properties under the unitary group. A particle-hole formalism compatible with these transformation properties is also presented.

The representation of operators in Fock space (often also referred to as occupation number representation or 2 nd quantization) is essentially equivalent to the representation in configuration space, it is, however, more general insofar as a Fock space Hamiltonian has eigenstates with arbitrary numbers of electrons, while in configuration space the number of electrons is fixed.
