The aim of this box day trip is to distinction the depositional environments and sedimentary facies of 2 carbonate platform settings: the south Florida carbonate peninsula and Caicos Platform. In doing this, we won't simply distinction how physiographic surroundings and weather strongly effect shallow-marine carbonate sedimentation yet, while, current new replacement versions of Bahamian sedimentation with direct software to the translation and prediction of similar historical carbonate facies and sequences.
In addition to containing a customary suite of Holocene sedimentary facies, Caicos Platform additionally indicates tremendous outcropping Pleistocene marine and non-marine sequences, delivering a unprecedented chance to determine how smooth facies are preserved in 3 dimensions.
To permit comparability of significant controls on shallow-marine carbonate sedimentation, this box day trip will commence via in brief reading Holocene sedimentary environments and facies forming in south Florida below the impact of a non-oceanic, low-relief, shelf surroundings and a wet weather.

AND SOUTHERN MARGIN Overview Islands separate the platform interior from the western, northern and northeastern margins of Caicos Platform. The southern and southwestern margins are open but are rimmed by a broad, subtidal levee (zone of higher relief than the interior). This leewardmargin levee appears to be a product of on-bank The transport of sediment during storms (Fig. 25). sediment comprising this levee feature is rich in irregular ooids, grapestone and peloids, and is very similar in composition to the sediments of the platform interior.
Where Scytonema mats are sediment stressed (repeatedly smothered by sediment shortly after recolonization; 12-24 months), it forms a low, thin, undulating surface with isolated tufts forming the undulations. Where there is a prolonged period of growth with no sedimentation, the mat develops its characteristic prismatic form. The Scytonema mat also appears to be a water level indicator, occurring just above normal high tide. Mangrove prop roots and pneumatophores commonly have a growth of Scytonema over a vertical zone of several centimeters.
Closely spaced tufts commonly form a prismatic or palisade structure in quite pure organic mats several millimeters to several centimeters in thickness. Where intercalated with periodically desiccated mud layers, the Scytonema mat is commonly broken into desiccation cushions. er of sediment, the mat dies. Subsequent colonization is either by growth from areas that were not smothered or through a pioneer Schizothrix stage of recolonization. The Schizothrix mat that colonized the new sediment surface 5 months after Hurricane Kate was largely replaced by Scytonema after 24 months (no observations were made in between).
