He shot three kids from the Surenos gang at a party. He told me that he was drunk and just protecting his territory. None of the kids he shot died but he would still be spending several years in prison. Shady was cool with me, always trying to tell me stories and shit through the windows. We also had to shower together since we were on the same unit. One day in the shower he explained to us how to make a Fifi—a prisoner’s pocket pussy. He explained that all you needed to do was “get a toilet paper roll, some of that plastic wrap shit, and a little Vaseline.
A couple days after that, while some of us were getting drunk down at Desolation, Billy came stumbling out of the bushes. His pants were stained with piss and his Metallica T-shirt was so dirty and filled with stickers and mud that I could hardly read it. His arms were covered in dried blood and scrapes from the bushes and cement. Someone asked him what the fuck happened but he just kept walking. There were paths all through Desolation but he just walked directly through the bushes and trees. Like a zombie.
Together we were a crew. Safe in numbers—no one usually fucked with us in numbers. Alone we got jumped by the jocks, low riders, metalheads, frat boys, surfers, hicks, and even the skinheads who listened to a lot of the same music as we did. But tonight I felt good—I had my crew, I was drunk, and I had a girl on my arm. Soon I would have some dogs in my stomach and everything would be perfect. On the way down to the beach some jocks gave us dirty looks and said something under their breath as I walked past them—I was used to it and didn’t really care.
