Emotional Expression As Helmrath and Steinitz (1978) suggested, the ability to cry together and display deep emotions in each other’s company is frequently seen as helpful. These emotions can be surprising, even frightening, but sharing feelings can provide additional insights between partners. This can be particularly difficult for men, who often feel the need to protect their wives from such sights. Interestingly, wives have reported this to be the least helpful thing their husbands did in response to the death of their child (Gilbert & Smart, 1992).

Finding points of similarity in their personal loss narratives can moderate the impact of conflicting views. qxd 10/11/04 1:01 PM When a Couple Loses a Child Page 27 27 • Participation in activities together facilitates the partners’ sense of being a couple. This may involve simply being together and going for walks, working on tasks or hobbies together, or caring for surviving children. Leisure activities that involve an expenditure of energy may also be helpful. As they reassess their roles and their relationship with each other, shared time and shared activities can allow partners to negotiate how these new or modified roles will be carried out.
