The cliffs of the Gorge expose about 1,000 feet of the mud flows. The first in the series of catastrophic events, between 12 and 17 million years ago, were the eruptions from dozens of mile-long fissures in eastern Washington and Oregon. The flows of hot and fluid basaltic lava spread over 60,000 square miles in both states. Only 16 of the over 200 known basalt flows occurred in gorge cliffs. When a former valley of the Columbia filled with basaltic lava, the river was rerouted north, and cut a new valley.

Have fun. An Introduction to Scenic Waterfalls of the Gorge Because of the over 600-foot-thick layer of Columbia River basalt, the Gorge has over 30 waterfalls, most of which are within an hour's drive of Portland. To give you an introduction to the falls area, I suggest that you start with Latourell Falls, stop at the Falls at Shepperds Dell, and visit Bridal Veil Falls. It is easy to do all three in one day, even if you get up late. They are less visited than Multnomah Falls, but still receive heavy traffic.
