Mind is to step back from its engagement with the ideas perceived to satisfy itself that our judgements satisfy a criterion for truth, nanlely, the one of clarity and distinctness. This is the emphasis which diverts attention from the objects of belief, redirecting it to the evidence or reasons for belief. Descartes' cogito is for this reason a more complicated agent than Plato's nous. Nous can be relied upon to grasp its object. The cogito must do that while satisfying itself that this seeing meets the evidentiary standards for true belief.
Philosophy is the discipline having title to this domain. Its subject matters are prior to and more assured than any that 53 54 INTUITION AND IDEALITY science can explore. For science is removed from its objects, first collecting evidence, then hypothesizing about those variables which determine that matters should be as we find them. Philosophy, by comparison, is specially privileged. Its judgements are evaluated immediately against data standing directly before the mind's eye. This is true, originally, of our self-knowledge, but it applies as well to logic and morals.
Descartes' failure to elaborate upon these aspects of mind might count against his claims to thoroughness but not against the intuitionist demand that every claim about any matter of fact be certified by an act of inspection.
