In 1964, however, the main hopes for enlightenment and therapeutic cure seemed to restat least among the people I knewon what the psychoanalysts themselves were up to. Analysts were still relative newcomers to the field of mental healing, trained at their own separate institutes apart from psychiatric centers of learning, and often determined to displace old-line psychiatry from its tradi- Page 8 tional position of authority. The old-fashioned psychiatrists had been associated mainly with custodial care and therapeutic pessimism; in 1964 not much time had passed since electric shock-treatment, and even more drastic surgical remedies, had been fashionable.
I was then trying to get some human feel for what the circle around Freud had been like, in order to understand what his ideas amounted to. So the possibility of my speaking with Helene Deutsch presented me with another special opportunity. I wrote her a short letter after the MIT meeting, explaining my interest in seeing her. She quickly sent back a note accepting my request. I could never imagine that I would be lucky enough to interview some of the key members of Freud's immediate family. As I will explain, Helene Deutsch was integral to my success.
Many of Freud's other disciples acknowledged naming their daughters for Anna Freud. It did not even cross my mind to press Helene about her son's name, since she was so cooperative about everything that mattered most. At one point she casually asked me to attend a meeting at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society, where a younger friend of hers was coming from out of town to present a technical paper. I was reluctant Page 26 to attend, a reaction consistent with my unhappiness with the general direction of American analysis.
