Although South African English is also a southern hemisphere variety of English, its  phoneme is farther back even than the English version so that bard in South African English sounds a bit like ‘bored’. NZE uses the  vowel for a group of words that have the  vowel in some varieties of English. Many Australian speakers use  in words like dance and chance, but NZE speakers use  for these words. Many American speakers use  for words like half and grass, but NZE again uses .

However, Janet Holmes investigated NZ women’s use of tag questions and hedges and realised that women were actually being polite. They spent more time than men did checking up on the feelings and ‘wants’ of their listeners (Holmes 1990). HRTs function in the same way as tag questions and hedges. And so the HRTs in exchanges like the one above do function as questions, but not questions asking for information. Rather they function as questions that are checking that the speaker really is giving the information that the listener wants, and that the listener understands what the speaker is saying.
