I don’t like it. I don’t like it. ’ As well as the camera obscura, there are three floors packed with optical illusions, fibre optic gimmickry as well as holograms including one of a giant creeping tarantula I still try not to think about when I take the bins out at night. Children can shake hands with themselves, stare into the largest plasma dome in Europe or watch themselves distort in wacky mirrors. At the observation deck there are panoramic views and telescopes (you don’t have to put money in) with helpful boards pointing out prominent buildings and landmarks.

If your children aren’t that interested in the difference between reserved and devolved powers, and if you are a bit hungry, there’s a free 10-place crèche for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years old (maximum stay four hours) operating 8am–6pm (b 01313 486192).
