Packing and shipping my gear to southern Chile was a major task. I had stuff squirreled away everywhere inside and outside the house, but somehow I squeezed it all into two crates, each measuring about three by three by five feet. I took the crates to a transport company, labeled them with my name and the Chilean National Parks Service (CONAF) address in Punta Arenas at the other end of the world, and drove away wondering if I would ever see them again. I had no money to replace the gear should the crates go missing.
I went out on the rocks to call and sing to them. In the afternoon, I took the boat five miles down the inlet toward the bay, then turned back because of rough water. It settled at times, but never really flattened out. I’m anxious to get going, but don’t want to take foolish chances. The GPS unit worked great the other day: located satellites with no problem, gave readings for location, direction of travel, and speed. Today it won’t work at all. Damn! It’s supposed to be waterproof but I suspect there ’s a bad seal.

There were lists on scraps of papers all over my office. ) In September 2000, I began the actual trip preparations. I’d intended to be gone long before then, and although I didn’t realize it, others were speculating I might never actually go. But that possibility didn’t seriously cross my mind. I consolidated the scattered lists I’d made and grouped items into categories: tools, building materials, camping and fishing, boat and motor, household, clothes and toiletries, electric and electronic, repair kits, first-aid, food.
