There is no prescribed age for khitān, though in general it is performed before puberty. In some countries, such as Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia as well as parts of Africa, khitān has maintained its ancestral symbolic value of entrance into adulthood. In others, and in particular among the Muslims living in the west, khitān is performed when the child is very young or just a few days after birth, and in hospitals.
