But how is the philosopher to proceed in understanding the world which is in process? This can be done by following the manner in which thinking actually functions, including both deduction and induction at one and the same time. In the analysis of any problem one does not start without any clues to an interpretation, but, rather, one begins an analysis of the facts at hand with the assumption that the data constitute some pattern and some hint of the nature of that pattern. When the facts are explored, the theory of their relationship is modified in accordance with the insight gained by the further investigation.
