They couldn’t believe it. An early publicity photograph, trying to endear myself to prospective employers. While undoubtedly these were big movies, the jobs on them didn’t last long and generally work was thin on the ground. So I was carrying on with my other career as an amateur steeplechase jockey. But I’d always be on the lookout for film auditions. At the time I was living about five miles from Pinewood, and a mile from where I was born. I’ve always been based around the same area and as luck would have it that was close to the studios.

The weather got so bad we spent more time partying than riding horses. There were hundreds of extras just hanging around freezing to death. I’ll never forget sitting next to Barry de Boulay, this wonderful old stunt guy who’d been a Motor Torpedo Boat commander in the war, and seeing an icicle hanging off his nose. Then it was over to Pinewood for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the classic family picture brought to the screen by 007 producer Albert R. Broccoli. I was one of the Child Catcher’s cavalrymen, and on the castle turret with a big old cannon in the scene where they’re trying to shoot down Chitty as it flies past.

Richard Todd would tell us of the films he’d worked on, Robin Hood, Rob Roy, and then I’d go and see them. As a kid I used to play cowboys and Indians and throw myself off my ponies, which drove my Dad mad. ‘Never throw yourself off a horse,’ he’d say. He was a bit like a pilot watching parachutists jumping out of a perfectly good plane. They just could not see the logic in it. I used to go to the movies and recreate what I saw back at home. I rode Richard Todd’s horses in all their races as an amateur after that, which was wonderful.
