It frightened me. So much emptiness. The only thing that arrested the eye was a small huddle of houses down in the valley. ‘We should make for the village,’ Lechasseur told me. ’ I nodded, and followed him. ’ ‘Yes; where does it end? ’ None of Sir Edward’s books had ever mentioned anything like this; they were for advanced men, not schoolboys, and assumed a great deal of knowledge that I simply did not have. I was intrigued. ‘A sphere? ’ He looked a little annoyed. ’ I shook my head. ’ I looked around, marvelling at the space that surrounded me.

I smiled at her, then. ’ Her hands tightened on mine. ‘Honoré? How is he? ’ ‘Where – no, start at the beginning. ’ I told her, in as few words as possible, the story of our escape and what had followed. When I had finished, she sat musing for a moment, then gave me a long look. ’ I raised my brows. ’ ‘Oh, don’t talk that way! ’ I shrugged, uncomfortable with the turn the conversation had taken. I did not know quite what I was, and preferred not to think about it, if possible. ’ Her face became grave.

He smiled. ’ I turned back to Lechasseur. ‘You see? We have all the time you could require. ’ He shrugged. ’ I settled myself against the cushions, and he began. ’ and the beginnings of my indignant protest, chased down the road after us for a way. Then the coach began to pick up speed, and he abandoned the attempt as futile. Instead, he went back to the village, and asked the locals how he might get to London. Why, by coach, they told him. And when was the next coach due? It was in a week’s time.
